Can't hire coach

I cannot hire an OC despite having an opening there.

Not sure what's happening.. my guess is the CPU will put someone there when you start the season. My other guess is that you did your league conversion after the coach hiring phase and did not have a coach which is throwing things off. I expect it to resolve itself when you move through a full season.

So I'm just supposed to not sign someone and let cpu give me a coach that will likely be terrible?

The only time to sign someone is during Coach signing Day 1 or Day 2 when the coaches are generated. There isn't another stage in the game to add a coach. So until you get to that stage, yes, the cpu should auto-generate one with 0 years just to fill the blank.

I am on the staff signing phase and the button is disabled despite having the opening there.

I'm having trouble reproducing this. I have empty spots on my staff, I click on "View Coaches" then click on the drop down to filter available staff to "Offensive Coordinators" then click on "Hire" next to a coach and it signs them.
