January’s Player of the Month title went to Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. Nowitzki averaged 26.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks as the Mavericks went 8-7 for the month.
Dexter Floyd has won his second Rookie of the Month title, averaging 8.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.3 blocks as the Milwaukee Bucks 6-12 for January.
There are more trades this month, continuing on to the freewheeling trade market -
Los Angeles Clippers trades:
2015 1st round pick
Dallas trades:
C Ben Gordon
Why for the Clippers:
The Clips are sitting nicely at 25-19 so shoring up their front line would be a clever idea. However, Gordon, one of Dallas’ X-Factors in their championship run is being held captive at their 11th man. Maybe with more playing time he will move up the ladder.
Why for Dallas:
Second year man Thomas Freeman has been playing well as their first man off the bench they didn’t have a need for Gordon so getting another pick is good.
Winner – Unknown
Depends on where the pick is. Gordon was picked #24 so if it’s higher than that it’s a win to Dallas.
Detroit trades:
2015 1st round pick
Cleveland trades:
PG Sam Dye
Why for Detroit:
They were in a desperate need of a PG and Dye is a great one. His attitude stinks but if the Pistons can get him under control then look out.
Why for Cleveland:
Dye and his terrible attitude had to and it’s great to see teams not be held at ransom by their spoilt player. Even if they only get back a draft pick this is showing that if you stuff around with the team you will be gone.
Winner – Cleveland (for now)
If Detroit can tame Dye then Detroit wins. The Pistons are at 15-31 so the pick will be high.
Washington trades:
2015 1st round pick
Philadelphia trades:
PF Jeramy Smith
Why for Washington:
Smith slots in at the Wizards’ 7th man and at 24-21 they probably aren’t going to get someone as good as him in the draft.
Why for Philadelphia:
The 76ers have got three PFs and two Cs on the team so losing someone as average as Smith isn’t a hassle and getting another pick in the draft will be good to replace him.
Winner – Philadelphia
Smith is such a ‘meh’ player that giving up a pick in the low 20’s wasn’t the best idea.
Minnesota trades:
2015 1st round pick
New Orleans trades:
SG Travis Howard
Why for Minnesota:
They now have someone to back-up Evan Turner as Corey Hines has been a bust. Although small (6’3) Howard can fill it up and will help out with the second unit.
Why for New Orleans:
They are dead last in the league and it looks like they are waving the white flag. Howard was decent, but nothing to build a team around so getting another possible lottery pick for him is what they could have hoped for.
Winner – Minnesota
Having that guard coming off the bench who can continue scoring is needed on every team and that is what they got with Howard.
There are a lot of these ‘trade pick for player’ deals going around these days which shows that teams are more open to trading their first round picks than yesteryear.
Onto our season, we play Miami again with both Lebron and D-Wade sporting hefty injuries and we pummel them 126-94. Wade, James and Bosh combined for 5/28 shooting for 18 points as Chris Bosh fouled out in only 11 minutes. Dwight Howard had 32 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks in a fantastic overall game and Ed Davis contributed 16 points and 5 blocks off the bench as we shoot 51 free throws (making 39).
Toronto Raptors 41-4
The next night we stomp the New York Knicks 121-107 as Kevin King scores 34 points and hands out 7 assists and DeMar DeRozan scores 12 points in 11 minutes but logs no other statistic. Dwight Howard and Amar’e Stoudemire play to a stalemate as both players foul out early. The Knicks have 6 players in double figures.
Toronto Raptors 42-4
We just beat the second and third seeded teams in the Eastern Conference but an average of 23 points, which gets more awfully excited.
We win for the 17th time in a row with a 113-93 win over the very good Philadelphia 76ers as a bench outing from none other than Chuck Hayes steals the highlights with 14 points in 16 minutes. Tim Mozgov helps out the Chuckwagon with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks while Jrue Holiday goes off for 35 points.
Toronto Raptors 43-4
Detroit were no match for us even with their new PG as we won 108-78 as Dwight Howard was close to a triple double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks and Reggie Williams had 20 points. The Pistons shot 38% from the field as they were totally outmatched.
Toronto Raptors 44-4
It’s the first match-up between us and Orlando since the trade (we won with Griffin once this season) and it’s no contest, 114-99. It wasn’t Dwight Howard who took his old team to the sword but Reggie Williams who scored 33 points on Jamal Crawford. Rajon Rondo shot 1/10 from the field but made up for it with 15 assists. Blake Griffin shot 8/22 for 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Toronto Raptors 45-4
After the game Blake Griffin and Ed Davis were seen at dinner together reminiscing about old times. The two became very close while Griffin was in Toronto as they used to be sparring partners at training. There has been a whisper that this is the reason why Ed Davis has been less patient about being on the bench.
Win number 20 is a 107-87 home win over the Lakers as Dwight Howard beats up Al Horford for 24 points and 16 rebounds. Kevin Kinig has 24 points while Rajon Rondo doubles up again. Andre Iguodala top scores with 24 points for the losers and Andrew Bynum grabs 11 rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
Toronto Raptors 46-4
Our last game before the All-Star break is a 118-85 win over Houston as Tim Mozgov and Dwight Howard combine for 34 points, 29 rebounds and 3 blocks while the Rockets’ five big men played a TOTAL of 96 minutes, or an average of 19 minutes because of foul trouble. The game was over early as no player on either team played more than 33 minutes.
Toronto Raptors 47-4
Heading into the All-Star break we have a comfortable 9 game lead over our nearest competitor, Miami, but I am not going overboard. The real season starts when the regular season ends and we found that out the hard way.
For all of you who wanted to see how the Howard/Griffin comparison is, well here it is –
Dwight Howard – 19.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 3.9 blocks and 1.1 steals.
Blake Griffin – 21.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.3 steals.
So you can see it’s fairly even but the most telling statistic is that we are 40-3 after the trade and they are 24-20. Sure we were 7-1 with Griffin but I am almost certain we wouldn’t be as good as 40-3 after that date.
Onto the festivities!
Hasheem Walker (IND) comfortably wins the Dunk Contest, beating out Stanley Robinson (NOH) 78-64 in the final. The other contestants were Rodney Benoit (SAC) again and Pape Sy (MIN) again.
We still don’t have anyone competing in the skills competitions, as Povilas Tailos (CHA) wins the Long Distance Shootout beating Mike Miller (MIA) and Adam Lofton (SAS) in the final.
The rookie game was kept close as the Sophomores beat the Rookies 105-96 as Zack Arthurs takes the Player of the Game honours with 25 points. Marlon Zinn (PHO) takes 25 shots to score 23 points, while Justin Cabrera (HOU) and Claudio Carrera (MEM) combine for 30 rebounds and 9 blocks. Dexter Floyd is the best for the Rookies with 21 rebounds and 3 blocks.
In the All-Star game, we have two participants as the East beats West 137-124 as Chris Paul takes MVP honours with 24 points and 13 assists. There are a massive eight East players who score in double figures, compared to the West’s five.
The starting five of each team was -
East:
PG Chris Paul PHI
SG Kobe Bryant CHA
SF Lebron James MIA
PF Blake Griffin ORL
C Dwight Howard TOR
(Kevin King was also selected)
West:
Deron Williams UTA
SG Tyreke Evans SAC
SF Kevin Durant OKC
PF Dirk Nowitzki DAL
C Andrew Bogut LAC
123-87 is the score of our first game back over the Detroit Pistons. Dwight Howard continues his All-Star play with 28 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks, helped out by Trent Bailey’s 13 points in 14 minutes off the bench. New Piston Sam Dye didn’t have the best game – 4/14 shooting for 11 points and 7 turnovers.
Toronto Raptors 48-4
Another battle of the top seeds and we win this one again, 124-113 over Portland. Kevin King is fantastic with 29 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds while the bench guards kept the lead going with DeMar DeRozan had 19 points in 19 minutes while Trent Bailey had 10 points and 4 assists in 11 minutes. Three Trailblazers top scored with 19 points but got nothing from their bench.
Toronto Raptors 49-4
We lose for the first time in 24 games as none other than the Orlando Magic beat us 108-92 as Dwight Howard is troubled with fouls the whole game. Jamal Crawford gets his revenge with 31 points while Blake Griffin is ‘held’ to only 18 points and 13 rebounds. We have 3 players over 20 points but we shoot a paltry 39% from the field.
Toronto Raptors 49-5
We lose again, this time to New York 114-104 as Wilson Chandler has 28 points on us while bench big Chucky Durden monsters us for 18 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks. Kevin King tries his best with 33 points but no one else came to play.
Toronto Raptors 49-6
Three losses in a row as we go down to Miami 119-114 with Lebron James doing what he does with 39 points, with Chris Bosh helping with 19 points. Rajon Rondo gets the best of Dwayne Wade again with 21 points and 11 assists, while Tim Mozgov has 24 points and 11 rebounds. Dwight Howard is nullified by Tim Duncan as Howard only shoots 3 shots for 13 points.
Toronto Raptors 49-7
I’m not worried yet as those three were SUPER tough and all away, but I just want our win #50 dammit.
The end of February was harsh on us being on a three game losing streak but when you are 49-4 before that I guess we can’t complain.
And we are still 6.5 games ahead of the #2 seed Miami with New York 9 games behind us in third. Atlanta is still last with a 16-41 record.
Utah has wrestled first place out of Portland’s hands at 39-18, with Portland and Oklahoma City 1 game behind them. New Orleans is not the worst team in the league; Atlanta is, as the Hornets have improved to a 17-40 record.

Third round of draft prospects (previous rank in brackets):
1 (1) – C Matt Bailey (BYU) Freshman
Has become the clear cut #1 pick this year unless something crazy happens.
2 (2) – SG Estell Phillips (Houston) Freshman
His stats are increasing and he is working out how to use his NBA ready body.
3 (NR) – SG Kyle Craig (Arizona) Sophomore
Craig and Matt Davis are playing leapfrog for the #2 SG drafted. It will be a tight race as both look very similar.
4 (4) – PF Joshua Potter (Connecticut) Sophomore
Not much has changed about Potter. Versatile, quick and has great hands.
5 (5) – C MAXIME Videnov (Bulgaria) 19 years old
Is the tallest player in the top 15 and because of that is probably rated higher than his skills tell.
