All-Star Weekend

Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard both lit up the Rookie-Sophomore game (31 PTS and 24 PTS respectively; Beal was elected game MVP) but neither player qualified for the All-Star game itself, which felt like a snub.

What really matters is that we are performing well above any reasonable expectations set for us at the beginning of the season – Lillard (16.0 PPG, 7.8 APG) and Beal (22.7 PPG) are developing ahead of schedule and have become a sensation within the local media; meanwhile we have maintained an overall win percentage that puts us slightly ahead of most popular early-season predictions (0.365%, good for 24th place in the league while most people had us in the bottom three). Obviously we are still building as a team, but we are already establishing a very solid foundation.

It was in this spirit that I decided to initiate a controversial trade:

SEA: PF Marreese Speights; C Cole Aldrich <> CHA: DAL 2013 1st Round Pick

On the one hand, our front court was already weak and Speights was arguably our best player in that area, not to mention our most expensive acquisition in free agency. That said Speights is underdeveloped, injury prone and his future on this team is questionable due to a variety of factors. The fact is that we are developing ahead of schedule in some areas and I feel like Speight’s production can be replaced by a rotation between Tobias Harris and Chris Singleton. Having an additional first round pick in the upcoming draft is more valuable to me at the moment than an average starter with no foreseeable future on the team.

SF Chris Singleton – 16 PTS, 7 REB, 4 STL
PG Damian Lillard – 15 PTS, 7 AST

Bradley Beal has been named Rookie of the Month for the fourth consecutive time. We have been struggling to make defensive adjustments in the absence of Marreese Speights but I still feel like we made the best decision with the long-term success of the team in mind.

SG Bradley Beal – 30 PTS, 3 AST, 7 REB
PG Damian Lillard – 19 PTS, 8 AST, 5 REB
SF Chris Singleton – 17 PTS, 6 AST, 11 REB

Tobias Harris and Chris Singleton have begun to find a rhythm in their rotation at power forward; having some stability in our defensive play has made a big difference overall. Damian Lillard (15.9 PPG, 7.7 APG) and Bradley Beal (22.5 PPG) have continued to carry most of the weight on the offensive side of the ball, but we have also been seeing some solid individual performances elsewhere on the team.

The team is starting to show some signs of wear and tear as we approach the end of the regular season; our biggest goal at this point in the year is to make sure that everyone stays healthy. Meanwhile, I have been satisfied with the rotation at power forward but I will have to wait until the off-season to make major improvements in the defensive unit.

Earning his fifth consecutive Rookie of the Month award has made Bradley Beal a very real contender for Rookie of the Year honors, which would be a huge achievement for this franchise. Lillard and Beal have continued to carry the scoring load while center Josh Harrellson seems to have fallen into a good offensive rhythm lately.

It has been a tough five game stretch, but at least Josh Harrellson seems to be developing his offensive game. Defensively we have fallen apart in the last two games and are experimenting with subtle adjustments in our line-up to help alleviate this issue through the last five games of the regular season.
