Team colors & game screen

Team colors & game screen

Postby NCAAhoops » Thu Feb 14, 2019 3:36 pm

I have been adjusting the team colors for the D19FCM and have not been satisfied with my results as far as the game screens that display the team color.
I spent hours making them accurate per teams official colors and wasn't happy, they didn't always match team logos as some school team colors don't necessarily follow the school official colors. So I went back and re-adjusted to the team logo colors which match well but I'm still a little uncertain I love the look. the logo seems to blend into the screen color a little too much maybe or it could just be me. So I went back again and lowered the Primary color (Screen) by -20 for red, green, blue and I like it better as the screen is a little darker color than the logo color but still don't know if it needs to be lowered some more or am I chasing the elusive leprechaun and a pot of gold.

So my question to the community is what do you like when you view a team screen such as roster or depth charts?

Here is a screen shot of logo matching for North Carolina

Here is a screen shot of logo -20 for North Carolina

Any thoughts? I would like to update the mod with these so any input even out of the box from what I said above is really appreciated. I assume I'm over thinking this.

I have a couple of imports, one with logo matching colors and a second with lowering screen color by -20 from logo if someone wishes to look at and is serious enough to give me their honest thoughts.

I'm confused by the ambiguous language in the statement:

Instead of "some school team colors don't necessarily follow the school official colors," did you mean to say "some school team logos colors don't necessarily follow the school official colors?" The original statement leaves me wondering what the difference is between "school team colors" and "school official colors." Or are there three different color palettes: the school official colors, the school team official colors, and the logo colors?

Are the colors in the "logo matching for North Carolina" screen shot also the Tar Heels' official team colors? Or were these colors changed from UNC's official team colors to the shades used in the logo?

As for which screen shot looks better to me, I like the first one (NC1Logo.png) with the colors matching the logo more than the second one with the darker shades.

If the colors in NC1Logo.png are different from North Carolina's official colors, could you edit the colors to the team's official colors (what you originally tried to do before you realized you didn't like some of the results) and post a third image with those colors so others and I can see if we like the results more than you did? I would like to see screen shots with the accurate team official colors in accordance with your original modification intent and compare them with the two screen shots you have already posted.

I think you're right that you may be over thinking this. If you've been spending several consecutive hours doing nothing but comparing small changes in color hue, you may want to give your mind a break from the activity for a day or so. Perhaps find something else that has different colors, allow your mind to change its visual focus from modifying team colors to the new activity (May I suggest some movies or cartoons? Cartoons especially have vivid colors that your mind can focus on.), then come back to modifying the colors for the DDS:CB 2019 FCM with a fresh mind, with a reset focus on visuals different from those present in the game.

The above advice is not perfect, but I mean it with best of intentions. :) I appreciate all the hard work and time you are spending on creating a thorough realistic game mod.

Thanks. I'm trying to make improvements now to things that would not change next year so I have a solid base and only need to make adjustments in team style play of play, coaches and stats. The colors in the current mod are from 2017.

Yes I wasn't very clear there. What I was trying to state was the Team Logo didn't always match University's official colors and was quite different. Most well known schools match fairly well. Sometimes the team logo used what a University called a Secondary Color.

For instance Oregon
RED GREEN BLUE
31....111....77 The green color of the logo I used in the game mod
18.....71....52 Official University color
21.....71....51 Oregon Logo from the University website

Portland
RED GREEN BLUE
53.......0...114 The purple color of the logo I used in the game mod
33.....21....69 Official University color (University color quite different than either logo)
51.....0....114 Portland Logo from the University website

These color numbers are enough different to be like the mod is now, which is what I was checking into that got me started on this. The color slightly different depending on which one you use. But The official logo and official color do not match even in their official branding information.
So the in first picture I used the mod logo color so the screen would match the logo. (the one you liked)
The second I took the logo color and subtracted -20 from each Red Blue and Green to purposely make it darker to give contrast between the logo and the game screen but make it consistent across each team unlike it is now.
I think some of the differences are web & print colors as some Universities even have separate pages for them.

So that is why I was leaning toward one of the two pictures. The current mod colors are pretty close to what you get with official colors

I'm still undecided as I think I just got used to the screen being darker than the logo in the game over the years, but color matching the logo is really more realistic, which is what I was trying to do in the first place.

So right now its use logo color 1, use darker color 0

I checked your NC downloads in Photoshop to see what you were talking about. What I saw was that the color blue used in the window backgrounds was less 'bright' than the blue of the logo.

I'm not sure that matters for two reasons:

The logos are the logos and the screens need CONTRAST for legibility, not trade mark accuracy. Making the blue slightly darker decreases contrast with the black font color, so a minor bad thing.

Most folks don't bother to calibrate their monitors using the Adobe software. I do! But I'm big on photography and such right now. Being slightly off on complete color accuracy is not going to be noticed by many because they don't have the exact matching capability to begin with. So, don't lose sleep over this!

The overall look of your logos as they are is very good--nice job! I have no complaints about contrast on the screens (so far) and that's good, too.

a better response from me is, i don't really give a damn as long as the logo's are accurate and i have bloomington's courts. the sky blue school colors for NC in your first example looked perfect to me.

Your_Imaginary_Friend makes a solid point about the importance of contrast for legibility. Consider (if you haven't already) using secondary colors if a logo, team name, or piece of text is difficult to see. For example, in the current edition of the Full College Mod the UCLA blue team color makes the UCLA logo Valdarix's mod uses barely visible. Maybe UCLA gold should be used for UCLA's screen instead for compatibility purposes? Some other UCLA logos have a gold border, so I could always substitute one of those for the logo currently included in Valdarix's logos pack in order to increase visibility and contrast with the UCLA blue the FCM currently uses.

Thanks for the input.
I took a break from it and went over all the Portrait Jerseys and on Court Jerseys and matched those up better on a few teams.
Good point about Valdarix's logos. I'll load those and compare as well. I'm leaning towards taking the team official color to start and make it slightly darker which will help screen text and logo contrast for the UCLA example you give. That options would seem to be the best option for both issues and I can do that pretty quick.
I guess trying to be realistic is really going to be, well realistic.
It will take me a couple of days as I'm busy tomorrow, but I'll look at the two mods logos with the darker contrast teams colors and see how that pans out.

Yeah, during the beta-testing, Gary had to tweak the colors some to make the text more visible against light colors (e.g. NC's blue). Rather than trying to be exact/perfect re colors, its more important for all information within the game to be easily readable. I'm pretty happy with most of the colors as Gary has presented them.

I would like to see some sample screenshots of the results. May I request that you include an image of UNC among those samples? I would like to compare the UNC image to the earlier UNC image that I liked.
